Twin Clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission) is an automated manual transmission that delivers slicker shifting through the gears while freeing the driver from the need to operate the clutch.
In line with its corporate philosophy, Mitsubishi Motors strives to deliver a dynamic driving experience while making advances to keep drivers safe. Twin Clutch SST and S-AWC do so by making driving more intuitive. Both the systems work to efficiently distribute power appropriate to road conditions, and deliver outstanding control and stability maintained by an "intelligent" system that reads and reflects driver intent in real time.

The full article written by Editor Mark Cox can be found on AutomotiveTV.net website.

http://www.australiancardirectory.com.au/index.cfm?page=news_details&section=1&id=3835

More technical data

Some inside information about the Evolution X:

Mitsubishi has shown the car known as ‘Prototype X’at several international
motorshows. The conceptis a precursor to the forthcoming Evolution X, likely to be unveiled in Tokyo later this year, but a source at the Japanese auto maker confirmed to VDI that Prototype X is “about 99%” of Evo X, allowing us to gain a good impression of how the next generation of the performance sedan will shape up.
“We’ve applied the same type of differentiation seen between the current Lancer and Evolution IX to the new Lancer and Evolution X,”
says Shinichi Kurihara of Mitsubishi’s corporate strategy office. “The suspension of Prototype X is much different to base Lancer because the
engine performance is so different. “Cornering speeds are much
higher, so unsprung weight has to be reduced dramatically otherwise
we can’t maintain that kind of high performance. The first change is that
the suspension material changes from steel to forged aluminum.” Consistent with the focus on reducing unsprung mass, Evo X will not have runflat tires. “BMW is adopting them but they are heavier and we don’t want the increased unsprung weight. “We have adopted wider tires,
wider track, and the geometry of the suspension is modified compared
with the normal Lancer,” adds Kurihara-san. “An Evolution should have quicker steering and sharper turn-in. The Super All Wheel Control
4WD system itself is very similar to the current one, however, we have
developed new electronic control software for the torque distribution.”
US market Evo Xs will get the Active Yaw Control rear differential for the
first time.

Underpinning Evo X is the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer’s C-platform, which
also spawned the crossover triplets of Mitsubishi Outlander, Dodge
Caliber and Jeep Compass. While the platform is shared with the Chrysler
Group in America, Mitsubishi took the technical leadership in developing
the platform foundation, and then handed it over to the respective
brands for final differentiation. The ninth-generation Lancer chassis is bigger than the previous model: the wheelbase is 36mm longer
(2,635mm) and the front/rear tracks are 58mm wider (1,530mm). Hightension steel (590Mpa and 980Mpa) not used in previous Lancers helped create a body structure that is 56% stiffer torsionally and has 50%
improved bending resistance. “The higher rigidity of the base car’s platform has meant we can be more precise in the [Evo X’s]
suspension tuning,” says Kuriharasan. “The new platform definitely
helped us make the new car more comfortable; it’s a bit softer even
though the dynamic performance is higher.” On the new Lancer platform, a
flat front-suspension crossmember replaces the traditional saddleshaped
unit. The flat design receives lateral loads directly from the front
lower arm. The change to a flat crossmember was facilitated by a new, all-aluminum, 2-liter DOHC fourcylinder engine designed with the exhaust manifold on the backside of the cylinder head. Suspension components such as the strut tower braces, lower control arm attachment points and steering knuckles were reinforced or strengthened. Engineers say the rigidity of the tire ground contact area was improved by 18% over the previous Lancer. Objectives for the MacPherson strut front suspension included enhancing rigidity, reducing weight and lowering the roll center. Suspension travel increased by 10mm. Base modelshave a 20mm front stabilizer barwhile the sport-tuned GTS trim boasts a 21mm bar. In the rear, the trailing-arm, multilink suspension returned with a lightened but stiffer rack-type crossmember. The toe-control arm is lower and camber rigidity increased to improve steering stability.

Mitsubishi also raised the trailingarm bushing to improve suspension operation over rough surfaces. Base models get a 18mm stabilizer bar while the GTS model is equipped with a 20mm bar and pillow-ball bushings
for upper and toe-control arms.
In terms of damping, Mitsubishi has stuck with conventional gascharged
monotube dampers on the Evo X, although it did consider an
adaptive damping system.
Lancers will be sold in the USA, Europe and Japan – each with
different levels of ride, comfort and handling that are particular to that
market. And although some Evo X testing is scheduled for the USA
ahead of its launch there (and in Europe too) in the first quarter of
2008, much of the suspension tuning for lesser models, even for the US
market, took place in Europe, as engineers wanted a European feel
for the ride and handling. The Evo X meanwhile, has mostly been
developed at Mitsubishi’s technical center in central Japan, which has a
small race circuit-type track, as well as at the bigger track at Tokachi in
Hokkaido. “Of course we used the Nürburgring as well to validate the
performance and made some further changes,” adds Kurihara-san.
Evo X retains hydraulic power steering rather than adopting an
electric setup. Kurihara-san explains the reasoning: “EPS is excellent
for fuel consumption, however we decided that good steering feel was
more important so we’ve adapted the hydraulic system,” he says. “The new engine [a turbocharged version of the 4B11 2-liter four] has improved
the fuel consumption anyway.” The Evo will take advantage of
steering improvements featured on the 2008 Lancer, including a larger
rack with stronger attachment points and better flow rates from the powersteering pump. The steering column was also upgraded with joint friction reducing parts and dampers on the intermediate shaft.

Evolution Concept X style lover

Check out this:

http://www.topline.su/catalogue/projects/LANCER%20EVO/

This person loved the styling of the Evolution concept X so much that he even went to make his Evolution VII look like one!

Evo X vs. 2008 WRX STi!

How do the two cars rate in performance? Coming from such a strong heritage of rally sucess it really has created a religion of Evolution supporters around the world. Simply mention the word 'evo' and everyone will know how sucessful this car has been and what super car like performance it has.

I think Mitsubishi has struck a winner with the up coming Evolution X. The styling is great! Sleek lines, agressive looks and an interior that is superb. The reports of the handling all say that the X will handle even better than the current Evolution IX. Power is going to increase too. Wow!

I'm coming from an Evolution and I've already signed up for a test drive for the Evolution X at my local Mitsubishi dealer.

Latest spy pics in Japan:

http://www.leftlanenews.com/mitsubishi-lancer-evolution-future.html

Pictures from the Detroit Motorshow:

http://www.automobilemag.com/auto_shows/2007_detroit/0612_2008_mitsubishi_lancer_evolution_x/

Lots of pics here:

http://www.leftlanenews.com/mitsubishi-prototype-x-breaks-cover.html

Early testing days video of the X's drive train in Japan:

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=109902

Mitsubishi Prototype-X Concept Car

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLsMWQRGsV8
